It’s called poisoning with fake information and playing with CSS,
which is what the Internet was designed for.
The idea that the Internet is one giant pattern and that a neural network might be useful as a search engine was a good one. It’s badly needed. Everybody who has ever tried to research something on the Internet, like discovering who really invented the windshield wiper, knows our current search engines are desperately in need of improvement.
But corporations are now worried that AI might have been just a tad overhyped. Reports say they’ve lost nearly a trillion dollars in stock devaluations because people have figured out that AI doesn’t provide a return on investment. This is surprising, since anyone who ever worked in AI (or neural networks as it was once called) knows that hype is what the field is all about. In the past, some researchers claimed improbably dense storage of patterns, up to 2N patterns in a network of N neurons. This might sound plausible in theory, but in practice it is impossible and it was proof that they never actually did their computer simulations. In contrast, the celebrated Hopfield network could store 0.17 patterns per neuron—meaning, for a network of 100 nodes, the group had exaggerated the capacity of their model by a factor of 7.456×1028. Others claimed that a single pyramidal cell (a model of a principal neuron in the cortex) could do everything in the psychology textbooks that a whole brain can do. This was also impossible and the researcher’s talk at a big national lab elicited mostly skepticism.
The AI models of today continue in that hallowed tradition. But a bigger question is who will lose their jobs if AI is implemented in the work environment.
AI does not understand the world; it merely instantiates it.
AI is not intelligent at five-year-old level or third-grade level. It is not intelligent at all. It is not close to being intelligent. It is not even on the path to becoming intelligent. Intelligence is not just, as Alan Turing supposedly thought, the ability to fool people into thinking you are a person. Intelligence is the ability to distinguish truth from falsehood by understanding the world.
‘Understanding’ means discovering general principles that can be used to predict the behavior of the system. People do this unconsciously every day. Every mathematical model contains variables that correspond to empirical features of the system. The fewer physical constants a model has, the better it is in helping us understand it.
In a neural network, those variables are called weights. An AI built on this principle contains hundred of billions of such variables. This means it is impossible even in principle to know what the AI is actually seeing. A model with a hundred billion variables would tell us almost nothing at all. It does not understand the world; it merely instantiates it, and not particularly faithfully.
That’s a darn shame, but it also means we can use the characteristics of AI to calculate which jobs are at risk. One is that AI cannot handle subtle language nuances like hype, hysteria, sarcasm, metaphor, lies, libel, and character assassination. It is good at speed-reading documents and generating grammatically correct summaries of their content. But because AI is not intelligent, even in a rudimentary sense, it is unable to distinguish between true statements and false ones. Therefore, we can divide jobs into four categories.
1. Areas where the inputs are guaranteed to be true
AI could theoretically be useful in these areas, provided it doesn’t hallucinate. Unfortunately, those areas also happen to be areas where true statements and validated facts are essential for human life, like aircraft design, medicine, and military strategy. Those are fields where every line on every page is scrutinized by a human who would suffer dire consequences for being wrong. Pattern recognition, maybe. Designing an airplane, no.
2. Areas where truth is unimportant
AI is useful in these areas (at least from the corporate viewpoint) because it allows the company to get rid of employees whose jobs don’t matter. This would include most of middle management, bureaucrats, academics in ‘studies’ departments, politicians, news reporters, editors, fiction writers, and actors. Any profession where obtaining a new insight is frowned upon is in jeopardy.
In some of these professions, truth is an obstacle to be overcome. In others it is irrelevant. AI will preferentially eliminate these jobs, and perhaps that is why the corporate leaders like it, though they might discover that, considering how their company is run, their job will go first.
3. Areas where truth is simple
In these jobs, like driving on a closed track or running a CNC machine, AI might be somewhat useful, but an ordinary computer program designed to carry out the task mindlessly is more efficient. Plumbers and electricians are safe for now because of the challenge of building a robot that can squeeze through the door into your crawlspace without getting stuck. And their work is not as simple as people think.
4. Areas where the employee must be able to decide what is true
This would include police work, where it’s necessary to figure out whether someone committed a crime, and industries like science. In science, the goal is to weed out papers in which the statistics are wrong, the abstract doesn’t match the data, the experiment is badly conceived, or the discovery is trivial or a rediscovery of something known for decades. Based on my forty years of doing science, I’d estimate that about 99% of all papers in the peer-reviewed literature fall into one or more of those categories.
An AI could summarize them, but it could never evaluate whether any of them is correct. It would have to rely a mindless scoring system, such as by journal ranking, as is done by academic bureaucrats. Thus, the academic bureaucrats would go but the technical people would survive.
Conclusion: if you want your job to be secure from AI, do two things: (1) make sure you work in an area where truth matters; and (2) don’t work in AI. A cynical person would say: wait—that’s only one.
