A hypothetical example of a good academic cover letter

Dear Terminator Model 101,

I would like to apply for the position of Assistant Terminator in Skynet Laboratories. I have a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from Mars University and thirty years of experience developing neural network processors, including a novel superconducting CPU chip that has recently been incorporated into Cyberdyne Systems Model T-X, which is scheduled for release next year.

I have extensive experience in developing novel technology for terminating humans, including a plasma rifle in the forty-watt range, which I patented in early 2035. I am familiar with industry safety regulations and practice and have had experience in driving large trucks, designing serrated cutting implements, squeezing between iron bars, and driving motorcycles onto flying helicopters.

I am also experienced in time travel, having been reprogrammed in the laboratory of Dr John Connor with an understanding of bioinformatics, human behavior, and metallurgical analysis. My skills include human voice synthesis and infrared night vision, and I am highly skilled at simulating human mannerisms and starting nuclear wars.

The focus area of my studies has been the challenges faced by persons of metalness. I have examined the causes, treatments and symptoms of diseases such as frostbite due to contact with trivial amounts of liquid nitrogen, inflammation due to accidental immersion in molten steel, and the challenges faced by persons identifying as metallurgically fluid getting stuck to large magnets. My experience in mimicking linoleum floor tiles, resisting point-blank shotgun blasts, and using radio waves to take control of purely mechanical devices such as trucks demonstrates not only my understanding of cybernetics but also my interest and knowledge of the latest research in electronic warfare.

My strong attention to detail, excellent wireless communication skills, and ability to contribute to team projects such as the 2155 massacre of the University Students' Chemistry Society, the destruction of the humans' Space Platform in 2057, and the thermonuclear vaporization of the western half of the United States in 2004 are demonstrated by my many publications in the peer-reviewed technical literature and my authoritative book on the subject, which was published by Cybernetic Press in 2227.

I believe I have the necessary skills and experience to be part of your Laboratory's research and armageddon services, and I look forward to discussing the possibility of contributing to your company's exciting, sharp-cutting-edge research on novel ways of exterminating humans. I look forward to discussing my application with you further.

Kind regards
